This abstract view was inspired by a wintertime stroll through a nearby prairie. Depicting its bleakness in hues of browns and yellows, I imaged it was slumbering throught winter, waiting for the warm sunshine of spring to bloom again. Can’t you tell I’m longing for Spring?

As I walked the harbor wall one clear summer’s morning last June, I could see so far out, right across the bay. Not a soul in sight. Just me and the Lakeshore. Inspired by a walk along the harbor wall at Egg Harbor, Door County, WI. Watercolor.

This painting was inspired by a wintertime view of the North Beach in Waukegan. A path through the prairie area leads from the car park down to the edge of the lakeshore. An interesting juxtaposition of land and water. Watercolor.

Inspired by hikes around Lough Tay, Wicklow, Ireland.

Lough Tay gets its name from the dark lake waters, which resemble black Irish tea, or té in Irish. It is also known as the Guinness Lake, because the owners, the Guinness family, are said to have laid white sand at the north end of the lake to make the lake resemble a pint of Guinness. Watercolor.

Inspired by the idea of slowly thawing snow and melting ice as spring comes to the lakes and streams of Wisconsin’s northwoods.

I wanted the capture that sense of “in-between”, the fog among the pine trees and the pockets of open water below.

I wanted to capture the sense of a long view of MCCD’s Glacial Park Conservation area, looking down the valley from the top of the road at the entrance.

I made the initial sketches for this painting en plein aire, during one very hot July day. I created this panoramic painting from my sketch when I returned home to my (cooler) studio. Medium: watercolor on cold press paper.

Sitting on the beach, I could see a large, noisy flock of seagulls perched on a rusty and decaying concrete structure out on the Lake. As soon as I finished the painting, they all flew off! Perhaps they felt they were no longer needed by this artist?

Painted on location at Isherwood Beach, North Dunes Nature Preserve at Illinois Beach State Park, near Zion, Illinois.

This painting was inspired by pictures of the corbelled stone roof of a megalithic toumb at Knowth, County Meath, near where I come from in Ireland.

Was shown at the 3rd Annual “Inspired By..” art show, 2024, in the North Shore Art League gallery, Winnetka, IL.
